What do VA/NVA and TIMWOODS mean?
Value-Added vs Non-Value-Added
VA
— the customer would pay for this step if they could see it happening (fitting a part, assembling a component).
NVA
— the process needs it right now, but the customer gets no value from it (walking, waiting, rework). Tag every NVA step with a waste type below.
The 8 Wastes — TIMWOODS
Transport
— unnecessary movement of material or product
Inventory
— more stock or WIP than needed right now
Motion
— unnecessary movement by people
Waiting
— idle time for material, info or a machine
Over-production
— making more/sooner than needed
Over-processing
— doing more than the spec requires
Defects
— errors, rework or scrap
Skills
— not using people's knowledge or ideas
How to run the study
Fill in shift length, breaks and demand to get a takt time
List each step in order, timing 3–5 repeat cycles per step
Mark VA/NVA, tag the waste type on NVA steps
Use the waste breakdown to prioritise what to fix first
